Vermont Tax Free Saturday!

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

Today, in order to stimulate the economy, there is a tax free holiday in Vermont…no sales tax.  Will this help our economy in northern Vermont?  Yes, for some; maybe for others.  However, what will help is supporting the local economy one person at a time, three stores at a time.  Ask yourself…what three independently owned stores you’d miss most if they were gone.   US Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2/6/2009, mention that if half the employed US population spent $50 each month in independently owned stores, their purchases would generate $42,629,700,000 in revenue!

Check out for more information…it’s an interesting idea and definitely an idea already supported by many in northern Vermont and other rural areas of the country.

And, here at Lee Anthony Fabric, it’s a bright, sunny day with spring in the air!  Have a great day.

Shopping the Sale

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

We just finished our first “Four Day, Four Dollar/Yard” sale last week and I was fascinated watching how people shop.  Every piece of fabric in the shop…fleece, flannel and cotton…was $4 per yard…people thought there was something seriously wrong with us! The sale was successful for us and for stash builders, crafters buying for their Christmas craft sales to make a profit, and for those quilting to share with various charities in the area.

Shoppers included the stash builder who wanted a yard of whatever they liked; the person who brought bits of their fabric to match; the person with the pattern and yardage needed for several projects; the crafter who knew what her customers would like and bought accordingly; and, finally, the person who just grabbed some of everything. Average time spent shopping…who knows…anywhere from 15 minutes to 2 hours. Women drove by on the way to camp for the weekend with their families, saw the sign and came right back after dropping off their families…that is a love of fabric!

We love each and every one of you! This gives me the perfect opportunity to get more fabric for you to enjoy…already ordered and on its way! Will we have the sale again??? Check back in the darkest month of winter!

Be Careful What You Wish For…

Friday, September 11th, 2009

My mother always said “Be careful what you wish for, you might get it!” Since opening Lee Anthony Fabric last year, I have heard “I’d love to work in or own a fabric shop” at least a hundred times…exactly what I said for years. Now Lee Anthony Fabric has been open for 18 months and I’m still glad I got what I wished for. The experience has been frustrating, stressful and tiring, but I’ve met many wonderful, friendly and generous people. It has driven my husband to distraction many times, but he has learned to cut fabric…I told him it is just like cutting a piece of plywood!

Now, my daughter, the designer of this web site and blog, tells me it is time to reach out to a wider group and spread the word about the quilt shop that “thinks outside the fat quarter!” Remember, I’m the person whose high school English teacher insisted on perfection, so written conversation is going to be a huge leap for me.

So, I hope you enjoy the conversation, quilt techniques and hints, pictures and experiences and hope you will share with us.
