The challenge of shirt quilts

June 30th, 2010
Irish Chain

Irish Chain

Alternating Stripes

Alternating Stripes

These two baby quilts were a challenge for me.  Each has fabric from a grandfather’s four  shirts…stripes, plain and plaid!  The Irish Chain was made with 4 1/2″ stripes and red fabric, backed with red flannel.  I added navy blue to the center of each square to tie all together.

The Alternating Stripes was to have been a Stars and Stripes top, but the pieces of the pattern did not align well to create the pattern.  So, a little imagination and manipulation was needed.  By adding red strips to 2 sides to square off the stripe block and alternating directions, it almost looks like the basic sail boat.  This was also backed with red flannel…soft, cuddly and durable.

Making the quilts using these shirts which held memories for Hilary and her brother was very special for me and I hope the new babies enjoy them for years to come.  Now I will look at clothing with a new eye…how can that be used in a special quilt!

May 18th, 2010

This is the time of the year when I want to be outside enjoying the colors in the woods and gardens, but I’m grounded inside the house, office or store!  So, to satisfy my insatiable appetite for color, check out these web sites:

www.allpeoplequilt.com and  BHG.com, as well as the fabric companies…Kona, RJR Fabrics, Marcus Brothers…

Especially good are all of the patterns, usually free, at these sites.  During this in-between time, I can plan and collect for the fall projects!  Hope you enjoy the sites.

Be sure to check out the vintage toys we are beginning to add to the “fragiles” section of this web site.

And, quick news will be added to our facebook page…hopefully on a more regular basis than I’ve been with this.  Thanks.

Old Stone House Museum

May 7th, 2010

The Old Stone House Museum in Brownington, VT, is located three miles from my daughter’s house in Orleans, almost straight up a three mile hill!  Once there at this time in the early spring it is gorgeous…different color greens, yellow and white flowers and bushes, vibrant red tulips…great place!  I held a “Repeating Star” class with four delightful women…young and older.  This time we did all hand stitching…more time consuming, but also more exact.  This is an extremely portable, fitting into a plastic sandwich bag!

Have a great Mother’s Day and happy spring!

Floating Star Table Topper Class

April 21st, 2010

Floating Star Table Topper

Join us at Lee Anthony Fabric on May 8 from 10-2 for Shirley Banks’ floating star table topper class.  Create a floating star with perfect points in a table topper that magically finishes with eight sides.  Shirley’s classes are always great fun and relaxing…we even order pizza from PizzaMan for lunch!  Call us for details at 626-4445.

Even though I never finish the project during a class, most people do or are well on their way.  It is wonderful to be with a teacher whose standard is fun and perfection is only in the eyes of the beholder!

Old Stone House Museum Quilt a Star

April 9th, 2010

Check out www.oldstonehousemuseum.org/events.html for details on the repeating star class May 5 from 6-8:30.  We will make a tablerunner and learn the technique that can expand to quilt size!  While you’re on their web site, look at all of the interesting events and classes coming up this summer.

Great new spring fabrics have arrived…many in purple.  Wind Dancer is dramatic with black!

Also, if you enjoy sewing, but don’t want to make a full quilt, check out www.allpeoplequilt.com for the All American Pillowcase challenge.  The pillowcases are appreciated by all ages and can be donated to any charity.  Takes only a few minutes and the results are very satisfying.

Vermont Tax Free Saturday!

March 6th, 2010

Today, in order to stimulate the economy, there is a tax free holiday in Vermont…no sales tax.  Will this help our economy in northern Vermont?  Yes, for some; maybe for others.  However, what will help is supporting the local economy one person at a time, three stores at a time.  Ask yourself…what three independently owned stores you’d miss most if they were gone.   US Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2/6/2009, mention that if half the employed US population spent $50 each month in independently owned stores, their purchases would generate $42,629,700,000 in revenue!

Check out for more information…it’s an interesting idea and definitely an idea already supported by many in northern Vermont and other rural areas of the country.

And, here at Lee Anthony Fabric, it’s a bright, sunny day with spring in the air!  Have a great day.
